AS Cabinet ministers line up to visit Ipswich on behalf of Labour’s Chris Mole, Tory high command seems to have forgotten young Ben Gummer, who has yet to have any major politician pitch in to help him. Ben assures me that he will have plenty of backing, which leads me to wonder whether there is a hidden meaning behind all Labour’s activity. Could it be that they think they’re going to lose to the Conservatives and are therefore desperate to bolster support for Chris? Read more »

Candidates for the Ipswich constituency in Suffolk have outlined how rail transport to the town could be improved. Conservative candidate Ben Gummer said: "For too long the Norwich to London line, which serves Ipswich, has been the poor relation of lines elsewhere in the country: it has been blighted by unreliability, poor punctuality and aging rolling stock. We have a great opportunity with a new franchise coming up to ensure that this situation comes to an end - for good. We need radical improvements in punctuality. Commuters and travellers from Ipswich need a rail service they can rely on, a rail service that will get them to work on time." Read more »

We want a good clean fight - that's the message from The Evening Star to all our general election candidates. First to pledge his support was Ben Gummer, the Conservative candidate for Ipswich: "At this election we have a golden opportunity to show people that politics is worth believing in, that it is a true market of ideas. Who are the Forgotten People?
We are! The 5 million self employed who have lost work, but don't appear on any statistics; the people disturbed by anti-social behaviour; teachers, who can no longer do their jobs properly because unruly children make their lives impossible; health professionals who have their budgets slashed while the PCT 'invests' more than £500,000 of our money in a car park! Patients who see services disintegrating at Ipswich Hospital, meaning they have to travel long distances for treatment; victims of serious crime, who see criminals released early, only to commit yet more crime.
